Janet Brush, Founder of Senior Alternatives

Janet Brush, LCSW, MSW, MSG, C-ASWCM, CLPF, is the founder and Managing Director of Senior Alternatives. Janet has a Masters in Social Work, a Masters of Science in Gerontology and is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker in the State of California. She also has a Bachelors of Science in Business Administration. Janet is also a California Licensed Professional Fiduciary. She has extensive experience in the field of Gerontology including working with a variety of issues such as dementia, depression, care giving and other problems associated with the aging process. In addition to her work in the private sector, Janet has worked in a variety of hospital settings including the New York University Aging and Dementia Research Center and Cedars Sinai Hospital in Los Angeles.

Ruth Ahearn, Care Manager with Senior Alternatives

Ruth Ahearn, MSW, has a Masters of Social Work from the Fordham School of Social Service and was a Licensed Medical Social Worker in New York before moving back to California. Ruth has been practicing geriatric social work for the past 30 years. She spent more than ten of those years working for various branches of the Alzheimer’s Association, several years coordinating senior volunteer programs and the final majority directing social service programs within senior care facilities.


Caryn Doherty, MSW, has a Masters of Social Work from the University of California at Berkeley.  Her geriatric social work experience began at Wake Medical Center in Raleigh, s Services of San Francisco as a geriatric care manager, Hospice by the Bay and the VA Medical Center of San Francisco.   Caryn also spent numerous years as the Long Term Care Ombudsman at the Laguna Honda Hospital in San Francisco.

Robin Sanow, Care Manager with Senior Alternatives 

Robin Sanow, RN, has a Bachelors Degree from the University of California at Berkeley and has been a Registered Nurse in the Sate of California.  Her social work experience began with volunteering at the Berkeley Women’s Health Collective and then as a Medical Social Worker at Alta Bates Hospital.  The majority of Robin’s career was with Alameda County Adult Services, specifically Adult Protective Services.  She was a member of the Alameda County Adult Fiduciary Abuse Team; she also collaborated with the 15 police departments in Alameda County and the District Attorney’s Office.   Her self-proclaimed greatest learning experience with seniors has been in caring for her own parents, which provided her great insight, practical knowledge, and experience with compassion.

Geri Thomas

Geri Thomas, MA, has a Masters of Gerontology from San Francisco State University. Her most recent experience is from the Institute on Aging’s Program of All Inclusive Care for the Elderly as an intensive case manager where she worked with clients with complex psycho-social challenges.  Previously, Geri worked at the California Advocates for Nursing Home Reform (CANHR), at Health Insurance Advocacy Program (HICAP), and as a trainer to volunteers at the San Francisco Suicide Prevention Hotline.  Currently, she is the co-chair of the northern California unit of The National Association of Geriatric Care Managers and an active member of The Gerotological Society of America, the American Society of Aging and the California Council on Gerontology and Geriatrics.

Fiduciary Management Team:

Marlee Taxy, California Fiduciary with Senior Alternatives   Marlee Taxy, CPA, MBA, is our Administrative Accountant and Co-Fiduciary with Janet Brush.  Marlee has a Master’s in Business Administration from USC and a Bachelor’s degree in Economics from UC Berkeley.  Marlee has been a CPA for 25 years and has advised a wide variety of companies of all sizes across many industries.  Her fiduciary work focuses on finance management and accounting.

June Marinoff, Fiduciary Administrator with Senior Alternatives  June Marinoff is our Fiduciary Administrator.  June has a degree in Sociology from UCLA and has spent most her professional life in both TV production and Administrative work.  June has been working since 2008 in a fiduciary capacity along side Janet Brush.

Independent Nurse Consultant:

Pat Lyons, Independent Nurse Consultant with Senior Alternatives   Pat Lyons, RN, MA, has a Master’s Degree in Psychology as well as being a Registered Nurse in California. She has been a community health nurse for over 40 years. During her career she has worked in a variety of public, private and HMO healthcare settings in a career devoted to ensuring equal access for all. Her most recent work has been as a Nurse/Case Manager at an Adult Day Health Center helping elders and the disabled live at home and maintain their independence as long as possible. She is committed to easing the burden of concern and enhancing peace of mind for individuals and families by providing compassionate education, advocacy and support, resourceful problem solving and coordination of care.
