Janet Brush, LCSW, MSW, MSG, C-ASWCM, CLPF, is the founder and Managing Director of Senior Alternatives. Janet has a Masters in Social Work, a Masters of Science in Gerontology and is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker in the State of California. She also has a Bachelors of Science in Business Administration. Janet has extensive experience in the field of Gerontology including working with a variety of issues such as dementia, depression, care giving and other problems associated with the aging process. In addition to her work in the private sector, Janet has worked in a variety of hospital settings including the New York University Aging and Dementia Research Center and Cedars Sinai Hospital in Los Angeles.
Ruth Ahearn, MSW, has a Masters of Social Work from the Fordham School of Social Service and was a Licensed Medical Social Worker in New York before moving back to California. Ruth has been practicing geriatric social work for the past 30 years. She spent more than ten of those years working for various branches of the Alzheimer’s Association, several years coordinating senior volunteer programs and the final majority directing social service programs within senior care facilities.
Caryn Doherty, MSW, has a Masters of Social Work from the University of California at Berkeley. Her geriatric social work experience began at Wake Medical Center in Raleigh, Jewish Family and Children’s Services of San Francisco as a geriatric care manager, Hospice by the Bay and the VA Medical Center of San Francisco. Caryn also spent numerous years as the Long Term Care Ombudsman at the Laguna Honda Hospital in San Francisco.
Nikko Merlander, LCSW, MSW, has a Masters of Social Work from the University of California at Berkeley and is a licensed clinical social worker in the State of California. She most recently worked as a social worker for the County of San Francisco where she performed biopsychosocial assessments to determine functioning levels, collaborated with families and community professionals and developed in-depth care plans. Nikko also has extensive experience working with clients who have mental illness, physical health symptoms and substance use disorders.
Janet Monks, MA, MFT, CMC, has a Masters of Arts in Counseling Psychology from Boston College. She is also a licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (MFT) in the State of California and holds a Care Manager Certification (CMC). She most recently worked as a Geriatric Care Manager for Sutter Care at Home, Private Care where she performed biopsychosocial assessments, developed and facilitated in-depth care plans, and collaborated with families and community professionals. Janet also spent nearly 20 years as a Care Manager with the City of Oakland’s Multipurpose Senior Service Program where she worked with chronically ill seniors to facilitate independent living and prevent institutionalization in a Skilled Nursing Facility.
Robin Sanow, RN, has a Bachelors Degree from the University of California at Berkeley and has been a Registered Nurse in the Sate of California. Her social work experience began with volunteering at the Berkeley Women’s Health Collective and then as a Medical Social Worker at Alta Bates Hospital. The majority of Robin’s career was with Alameda County Adult Services, specifically Adult Protective Services. She was a member of the Alameda County Adult Fiduciary Abuse Team; she also collaborated with the 15 police departments in Alameda County and the District Attorney’s Office. Her self-proclaimed greatest learning experience with seniors has been in caring for her own parents, which provided her great insight, practical knowledge, and experience with compassion.
Geri Thomas, MA, has a Masters of Gerontology from San Francisco State University. Her most recent experience is from the Institute on Aging’s Program of All Inclusive Care for the Elderly as an intensive case manager where she worked with clients with complex psycho-social challenges. Previously, Geri worked at the California Advocates for Nursing Home Reform (CANHR), at Health Insurance Advocacy Program (HICAP), and as a trainer to volunteers at the San Francisco Suicide Prevention Hotline. Currently, she is the co-chair of the northern California unit of The National Association of Geriatric Care Managers and an active member of The Gerotological Society of America, the American Society of Aging and the California Council on Gerontology and Geriatrics.

Tanya Trapani, MBA, is our Director of Operations. Tanya has a Master’s in Business Administration and a Bachelor’s degree in Anthropology from University of Hawaii. Prior to joining Senior Alternatives, she spent 13 years working in the Financial Services industry, focusing on marketing and client relationship management. Tanya is delighted to bring her financial and business management experience to the Senior Alternatives’ Team.
Yvonne Cherry is our Director of Home Care. Yvonne has over 20 years of client and operations experience across various industries. Prior to joining Senior Alternatives, Yvonne served as a Care Coordinator for a geriatric home care agency. Yvonne has also held a number of positions in the temporary staffing industry, specializing as a recruiter, account manager, and staffing coordinator.
Marlee Taxy, CPA, MBA, is our Controller and Administrative Accountant. Marlee has a Master’s in Business Administration from USC and a Bachelor’s degree in Economics from UC Berkeley. Marlee has been a CPA for 25 years and has advised a wide variety of companies of all sizes across many industries. Marlee is also a licensed fiduciary and focuses her fiduciary work on finance management and accounting.
June Marinoff is our Billing and Payroll Administrator. June has a degree in Sociology from UCLA and has spent most her professional life in both TV production and Administrative work. June has been working with Senior Alternatives since 2008 in an administrative and fiduciary capacity.
